Belgian draft-horses at a county fair in Essex County, NY during a horse pulling contest. This pair did not get hitched to the sled in time.

The value of draft animals depends upon their ability to pull and capacity to endure sustained effort. The object of this contest is to determine the sustained maximum pulling capacity of each pair. These contests give valuable information on the relation between form and function in draft animals and stimulate general interest in the breeding and use of good draft horses for the future.
